Furnace shutdown and repair is a critical step for glassmakers.
The lean timeframe - when the furnace is cool enough to be entered - must be optimized to get as many pieces of information as possible, both at a qualitative and quantitative point of view. In this paper, the different spatial scales of post-mortem analyses on refractory materials are presented. At the sub-millimeter level, the impact of operating conditions can be inferred from the microstructure analyses. At the centimetric and metric scale, comprehensive information is difficult to gather in a short schedule. Advanced technologies are needed, which include 3D laser scanner capacities, mastered by SEFPRO.
Such innovations bring quantitative and precious knowledge on the whole furnace behavior towards corrosion.
