How will the electrification of glass furnaces impact refractories?
In order to decrease CO2 emission in glass melting processes, glass industry use more extensively electrical boosting. This induce particular combine stresses on Fused cast electrode blocks such as glass corrosion, thermo-mechanical stresses, thermo-electrical stresses. Based on post mortem fused cast electrode block studies, laboratory pilot corrosion tests and numerical simulations we will discussed the complex damaging process these particular block.
We will observe the properties evolution of refractory material submitted to glass flow rate and intensive electrical current. With the support of the long experience on refractory material application, different refractory material choice will be proposed. Thanks to thermos-mechanical FEM numerical simulation, electrode block system including electrode holder and their influence on thermal stresses fields will be analyzed.
Finally, we will describe a simplified corrosion simulation model than can help to establish recommendation and could help for refractory choices.
