SGT - 20th Furnace Solutions

The Society of Glass Technology (SGT) will host its 20th Furnace Solutions Conference in St Helens, UK  on 3-4 June 2026, bringing together glassmakers, end users, and suppliers around the realities of decarbonisation.

About the Event

Theme : De-carbonisation, what's the reality

Centered on “Decarbonisation: What’s the Reality?”, Furnace Solutions 20 positions itself as a focused, furnace-oriented forum for the glass supply chain. The two-day programme is expected to feature technical presentations from industry experts, alongside dedicated networking moments designed to connect glassmakers, end users, and suppliers around shared operational and strategic challenges.

Abstract: Soldier block corrosion profile simulation, a tool to understand the impact of low carbon melting process evolution

As future of Glass industry is intensively related to energy consumption decrease and low carbon emission, new trends in glass melting technologies are happening. This could have a significant impact on the corrosion of glass contact refractory blocks.

For these reasons, SEPFRO has developed since few years finite element model to simulate corrosion soldier block profile. Based on the understanding of corrosion laws and the physical properties of Electrofused Cast materials and coupled with CFD data, that gives glass temperature profile and glass velocity profile at the vicinity of refractory interface, we can estimate corrosion profile evolution of soldier block with time.

We will discuss and compare the different corrosion profile that could be obtain with different melting technology and melting conditions. Starting with flame furnace as reference, we will observe corrosion profile evolution when going to hybrid furnace and full electric furnace on generic cases.

The model helps also to analyze the impact of different parameter such as refractory material properties, refractory thickness, cooling efficiency and others. Moreover, we will disclose different model development that could take in account more complex corrosion situation such as throat, barrier wall and bottom
