Sustainability actions at SEPR Palakkad

Description

SEFPRO is deeply committed to reduce the environmental impact of its activities across the world and act to speed up decarbonization of refractory production. Strict targets have been set, with objectives on water withdrawal, CO2 emissions, circular economy and product stewardship to be achieved by 2030.

To meet these targets, our sites have been accelerating their efforts to further reduce their footprints. Our fused cast and sintered plant in Palakkad, India, has been taking several actions in that regard. To reduce carbon emissions, solar panels have been set up on the plant’s rooftops in 2022. The solar panels have now been running for several weeks and have so far generated 2.5 MWp of power and will be able to generate up to 3500 MWh of solar energy per year and thus reduce the plant’s CO2 emissions by 2614.5 metric tons per year.

In 2022, SEPR Palakkad has also acted as a frontrunner for hybrid power through inter-state transmission systems (ISTS), a renewable energy transmission network across India from which SEPR Palakkad has secured 3MW of renewable energy supply scheduled to reach the plant starting from 2023.

Reducing, reusing, and recycling waste is also an integral part of our sustainability roadmap. SEPR Palakkad recycles food waste from the cafeteria and thanks to a digester, has been turning up to 300kg of organic waste into biogas daily since 2019. The biogas is then used by the cafeteria staff to cook meals, generating a virtuous circle.
