Abstract : Advanced Modelling for Regenerator Design Optimization, Driving Energy Efficiency in Glassmaking.
Tuckstones are essential components in the glass furnace refractory assembly. They ensure the stability of the superstructure walls, protect the upper tank side of wall blocks as well as the supporting steel from the intense heat of the furnace atmosphere, and particularly the flames. However, tuckstone breakage is a common issue that can reduce furnace performance and compromise the integrity of the steel structure, causing joint openings and potentially leading to wall collapse.
After conducting post-mortem studies and numerical simulations to identify the causes of tuckstone breakage, SEFPRO developed TuckPro: a long-lasting composite tuckstone solution.
TuckPro combines a fused cast tuckstone with a SEFPROShield® insulation board on its bottom face. SEFPROShield® withstands the weight of the superstructure wall and significantly reduces thermal gradients within the tuckstones.
SEFPROShield® insulation board also acts as a barrier against temperature variations on the cold face of the tuckstone, minimizing thermal shock exposure. This allows for the use of both fused cast AZS and High Zirconia (HZ) as tuckstones materials.
TuckPro tuckstones are corrosion-resistant and effectively protect the steel structure and upper tank side wall from heat radiation. This solution improves the airtightness of the furnace atmosphere, reducing unwanted air intake, which is crucial to reduce thermal losses in the glass furnace.
Using TuckPro leads to significant cost savings with a short payback period. It reduces operational expenses (OPEX), lowering natural gas costs and maximizes energy efficiency of the glass melting process. Additionally, it helps decrease CO2 emissions in line with CEA and CCER standards, supporting sustainability goals while enhancing the financial performance of glass manufacturers.
